1 min. readThe Executive Council of the African Union (AU) has approved the “Continental Artificial Intelligence Strategy” to encourage AI adoption in member states. The strategy, announced on Aug. 9, aims to utilize AI for the continent’s development and well-being. Key recommendations include creating an AI-friendly environment, establishing governance systems, and integrating AI into key sectors. The strategy also focuses on promoting AI skills development, research, and innovation while respecting African culture. It outlines a five-year implementation plan from 2025–2030, with phases dedicated to laying groundwork and practical implementation. Currently, only six African countries have standalone AI strategies, while others are integrating AI with technologies like blockchain. Progress has been made in defining AI policies and institutions in several countries. The strategy seeks to boost African participation in global AI governance and enhance regional cooperation to drive AI development in Africa.
