The Bank of England (BoE) and the UK's financial regulator have introduced a sandbox to investigate the potential of digital ledger technology (DLT) in the notary, maintenance, and settlement of financial securities. Known as the Digital Securities Sandbox (DSS), this initiative aims to allow companies to discover the advantages of DLT in the realm of financial securities. The regulators believe that implementing these technologies successfully could result in cost and time savings for markets and users, enhancing efficiency, transparency, and resilience. The DSS will enable the trading, settlement, and issuance of digital securities in the UK while adhering to regulatory standards. This move is expected to bolster the UK's position as a global financial hub, fostering investment and sustainable growth. Interested firms, regardless of size, can apply to participate in the DSS, provided they are legally registered in the UK. The sandbox is set to operate until December 2028, with the possibility of extension, and will progress through testing, go-live, scaling, and a permanent regime stages.
